princesa de la flora

The Red Dress Project is an annual assignment that requires the creation of a solo red gown to be made for the American Heart Association. The project is a way to share the important information surrounding heart disease and heart health for women. Princesa de la Flora was created for Brynn, my personal friend with a heart condition, with the goal of empowering her to feel like the princess that she is. The collection takes inspiration from palace architecture, real royal women, and the animated princesses that we both grew up being inspired by.

Roses were a motif that kept showing up through different places in my research, and became a big source of inspiration for the designs.

I wanted to find a way to bring in some of the pretty pastel colors that were seen to compliment the red rose color that I'm looking at.

I love all of the archways and shapes that are seen in such ornate spaces like a palace. I wanted to look at where a princess would live and what would be surrounding her.

I brought some of those details into the dresses, as well as making sure that the dress would match the space.

the designs

Each dress pulls inspiration from a different mix of elements from my research. Each dress though has a detail that calls back to a rose.

The tiering is like the petals layered on top of each other, seen in the skirt or the bodice. Some have fabric roses or lace with rose motifs.
